Medicine for Melancholy- review

I loved it! It wasn't perfect but I felt the script. You guys are sleeping. This film is about a man and a woman who have a one night stand, then spend the next day getting to know each other.

Big Star (I was pleased but this star isn't for filmmaking amazement)

Sunday, December 27, 2009

Avatar- I got up early Saturday and headed to Seoul just to see this film. I got a ticket for the IMAX 3-D show at 12:30. I ran into one of my co-workers and her boyfriend used his point-card to get me free movie snacks. (smile) Well, this was the most painful movie going experience I have ever had. I think I was too close (better yet I know I was too close). I was in the 3rd row b/c the theater was packed. My eyes hurt so bad. Afterward, it took a few hours for my vision to return to normal. I felt the film was a bit boring. I was not moved and I think this is all b/c I sat too close and saw it in 3-D. I did watch it through my black people lenses and I couldn't help but think about the evil non-native man coming taking over land and killing off the natives. I compare this film to the Last Samurai. I just want to know why can't the natives rise up and fight and stand up for themselves without the help of some strong foreign white male hero that survives while many of them die? This has nothing to do with the look of the film which I really can't judge b/c like I told you before my eyes went crossed. It looked cool but I'm also not a sci-fi lover. I can't even rate the movie. If you see it in 3-D, get good seats.

Good News Tuesday

Following in the Tradition of the Happy Go lucky Bachelor some good news this Tuesday from Cnn a young boy making bears for other kids.

United States of Tara -review

I know I should be writing or reading but I like to have something playing when I am in the house. Anyways, I watched the 1st season of this show. The show is about a woman named Tara who has alternate personalities. (one a teen, one a redneck male, one a stepford wife, and the last one a mysterious creature) The show is pretty good. The acting is great. I love the husband character. The actor that plays the husband has a sweet voice and on the show he is the nicest guy taking care of this woman with alters. The kids have their own lives that add to the whole show. If you are thinking about watching the show I say give it a try.

Veronika Decides to Die-review

Veronika Decides to Die- Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a woman in her mid-twenties that is unhappy with her "perfect" life. After, a drug overdose her parents check her into rehab. In rehab she learns how to live and be happy again. It took me four days to finish this film. The reviews had me thinking this must be some great emotional film that would make me feel good deep down inside. Wrong! It was odd, predictable at times, and really deep into the world of an unhappy woman's fantasies. Melissa Leo and her character's story is more interesting than the rest of the film. For that small part I will give this film a small star.

Aviator- review

Aviator-I borrowed this film from my film buddy downstairs. He told me so much about the film and described an OCD scene in the film. I popped it in on one of those up too late nights. The film is great. I do think it should have ended about 5 minutes earlier. The acting is great and the film looks great. You guys know I'm a sucker for films about films and making movies. I think the film should have won best picture that year since they won most of the other awards. I'm not sure if should have beat out LeoJamie but still it was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than Million Dollar Baby. Big Star!

Glee- the TV Show

Glee- I try to talk mostly about movies but I want to know your thoughts on this show. This is a new show that I discovered. I saw a youtube video of them doing their version of "Bust Your Windows" and wondered what is Glee. After, some research I found some of the episodes online and watched a good percent of the season. I think the show is cute it reminds me of "Boston Public" a bit but more focused on the kids. I don't like all the song and dance numbers with the so-so singing. I think the show is good enough to watch on my quiet afternoons. What do you think?

Bruno-very short review

I watched Bruno this weekend. The concept was funny but the film was just hard to get through. The only part I really found humorous was the Gayby part. Pass on this one.
I don't think a smiley can express my reaction to this film. I was not amused.

Eating Live Octopus

Yesterday the parent's I teach took me to dinner after our last class. I got to try live octopus. Well, it doesn't taste bad. It taste like raw fish just like when you get it not squirming on your sushi plate. I guess after they chop up the tentacles, they still have life left in them(insert smiley here). The thing is it was sticking to the plate and to each other. The suction cups made it hard for me to pick it up to eat. In addition when I put one in my mouth it tried to stick to the inside of my cheek. Unfortunately, the pictures and video I took are on my cellphone and I don't know how to get them off of it. Since this is so I will share some youtube videos with you.

MLM's thoughts on the most talked about black films this year

Good Hair
I have become more social in my last few months in South Korea. There is a facebook group called the Brothas & Sistas of Seoul. A few weekends ago we got together to watch and discuss Chris Rock's documentary good hair. Here's something you may not know; a good percent of the blacks that are teaching over here are natural or have locks. There are some with perms too. Anyways, we watched it we laughed and then the discussion began. There was a lot said about why some women are currently perming their hair. One sister with dreads made the boldest comment by saying that women that chronically perm their hair that deep down inside they hate themselves(I can't quote her but that was the gist of her statement). They tried to get the brothers to discuss their preferences but only a few were there and only a few spoke on it. My thoughts on the film- it was funny, it was informative, and the best thing it did was cause us to talk about hair issues. I think Ice-T really helped this film. Lastly, I didn't care about the hair competition.

There was wayyyyyyyyyy too much hype around this film. Not that it wasn't a good film it just made me think I was in for a treat. I read the book for a bookclub discussion the Brothas and Sistas had this weekend(which I missed) . I read the book then I watched the film. Tambay told me not to have expectations but it was hard especially after reading the book. Okay, I agree the acting was good. I had a few issues with the way it was shot. There were moments when it felt like he was on a handheld doing some amatuer filmmaking. I thought I was shooting it for a second. I didn't like how it ended simply because it felt short with no resolution or insight to what was really ahead for any of the characters. In addition, to this whole light skinned people being good in the film beef was irking me. If the teacher would have been dark with dreads and lesbian folks would of had something to say. Now all sisters with dreads are lesbians- I can hear it now. If you don't mind me comparing the book to the film for a moment; what I got from the book was some assumptions I made about the author. I felt it paid homage to the writers who have inspired her and was a reflection of Harlem shown through the hardships in the life of one young lady. What I got from the movie was a young lady going through hardships and having some people come into her life helping her, find her own strength. I don't have any other problems with the film. I liked it just not a whole lot. I want to watch it again after some time has passed.

I know I'm super late with the reviews but maybe you want my opinion too.

Ninja Assassin-review

What is going on in the world of movies? This film had so much potential. From the beginning I knew this film could either be really good or be really bad. For some reason they decided to have this dumb story be the reason why this Ninja has resurfaced. I was happy that the leading lady was a black woman(Naomie Harris). Yet, her character sucked and her interactions with the Ninja just brought the film further down. The fight scenes were good. The Ninja's backstory alone could have been the film. I'm not gonna spoil the movie but if you have your hopes set on seeing this (like I did) don't waste your time. I think if they made a sequel to this film and made smarter choices they could have something here. I think it would be hard for them to get another story out of this but anything is possible. Rain the Korean pop star looked good and could pull off a few more stories. This is another one b/w okay and needing a random smiley.

Black Dynamite-Review

I pretty much loved it. It was really good up until a certain point then it kind of went down hill and started overdoing it but that didn't ruin the film. Michael Jai White was great. The film brought me back to the old days when movies were being made with all-star black casts. You def. want to check this one out. It is the best black film I have seen all year. If you haven't seen it yet get on it. I think the fellas are gonna love it.
Well done all around! Tickets Please!

B-girl movie -review

B-girl- a movie about a b-girl from New York who moves to Los Angeles after an incident with her ex-boyfriend. Then it becomes Save the Last Dance with break dancing. Wesley Jonathan plays the part of the black boyfriend. I was hoping to at least see some cool dance moves. This film was just following the formula and keeping it corny. BE B-GIRL BE! I have a script like this in my collection and I refuse to share it with people now. The love of the craft didn't translate into a good film.

An e-mail from my mother

She forwarded this one to me.

I saw this movie last week. My friend and I were going to see it last weekend but when we got there, there was only one seat left. Gonna keep this one short and let you watch the Spill.com review which I pretty much agree with. The film is fun and entertaining through most of it. I really liked the special effects on the escape vessels. The movie was old school disaster movie style, meaning it wasn't so cool it was more random. A lot of the side characters didn't help the story at all. I'm still a fan of John Cusack. I think the story sucked but there were some cool scenes. I'm so tired of Thandie Newton's bland acting. Just once I want to see the actual president play the president in a film (Is this possible?). I'm going to give it a small star. Also, you should see it on the big screen if you do want to see it.

Random trailer for today

Julie and Julia - review

Julie and Julia
I do not like Amy Adams I really do not like Amy Adams. She's like a character herself. I feel like I'm watching the same too perky, sweet voiced role in every film she plays in. Meryl Streep however is just a talented woman. Stanley Tucci is also good at what he does. The film has two stories one is about Julia Childs as she learns to cook and sells her first book. The second story is about a woman named Julie who is turning thirty soon and decides to cook every recipe in a book by Julia Childs book (and blog about it), so she can feel accomplished. Many people complained about the Julie story in the film. I think it was okay but a tad bit too sweet at times. I think they told the story well visually but something about her story lacked appeal. I think it was because it was really hard to find sympathy for her or to even like her. The film was good but I think I will just give it a medium star b/c I wouldn't want to watch it again. . If you enjoy cooking it may inspire you.

Here's something maybe you didn't know the Julie story is about a real woman and she turned her blog into a book then what did we get a cute movie.

Sin Nombre -review

Sin Nombre - Takes us into the world of a gang in Honduras and the journey that many immigrants make to the U.S. I'm not sure how close this film is to real life but, I like how they took time to show an immigration journey and the many obstacles. The tattoo's that the gang members had especially the leader were unique. They are pictured to the left. The film tells two stories. One story is about a young man who's a member of a notorious gang and in love. He does the unspeakable leading him to run for his life. The other story is about a a young woman traveling with many other immigrants up to Texas after being separated from family. The two cross paths, fall in love, and journey to escape their pasts.

This film is worth the watch. Medium star

2 movies recommended by a friend- Reviews

The Time Traveler's Wife-
I've searched the net for this one. I finally got to watch it at my local theater. This film was slow and confusing. Most of the film was just this couple at varying ages with backdrops that didn't stand out. I feel like the editing could have been better and the story needed to be better. The concept was cool but it def. was not a tearjerker for me.

Black-a new film from India. A remake of the Helen Keller Story. The acting was great but I saw the Helen Keller Story many many years ago when I was a kid. Let me go off-subject for a second. My teachers showed us some of the most random films. Kids today get all this cute stuff while I was watching Roger and me(guess they helped shape me). While watching this film I felt like I knew what to expect since I saw the original film. The original is also painful to watch as the child and the teacher fight. I just wasn't moved. It was visually very appealing but I've been trying to finish this movie for days. I almost gave up. I get it these remakes are for the people who have never seen the original story. They can't be for the people who loved the original. I see they are re-doing Clash of the Titans. Fun Fun

Both of these films are between the small star and the random smiley. Also, my friend no longer gets to recommend movies to me.

Pepero Day

Today, is Pepero Day. A day dedicated to the cookie stick dipped in chocolate( I think some may be pretzel sticks). In Korea friends and lovers give each other these treats today.

Do a good deed!!!

This comes from my friend's livejournal:

"I checked this out, it is legit. "Very Special Request: Diana Harrison Biorkman has a 5-year old son in his last stages of a 2 1/2 year battle with Neuroblastoma Cancer. They are celebrating Christmas next weekend and Noah loves Christmas cards. Please take a minute to send a card to: Noah Biorkman 1141 Fountain View Cirlce, South Lyon, MI 48178. Thank you so much and please pass it on. Lets get a truck load to him!"

The mother is an aquaintance of a friend of mine. I know, I know. You don't know my friend, you might not even know me very well. You may have your doubts about this, I always have my doubts when I come across stuff like this. But no one's asking for any money, just a holiday card. All *I* aks is that you take a moment to consider sending a card. I sent a short simple pretty card that I found at CVS for two dollars. I signed my name along with my city and state. I thought about getting some cute holiday stickers and decorating the envelope with them, but I didn't see any. I figuered I'd rather get it in the mail right away instead of waiting till I find cute stickers and glitter or 'the perfect card'. I keep thinking "how wonderful for this little boy if he gets 75 unexpected cards from all across the country. Or a couple hundred. Or even just a dozen."

The Screenings

The 48 Hour Screenings went well. It was hectic and crazy but I'm happy. I was blessed with some great people to work with who were and have been really dedicated. Tears. I am so happy for the filmmakers and glad that some folks thanked me and lifted that worry off my shoulders. Two more events. We have to tally up some more votes tonight. One more screening tonight. Then the awards next Sunday.

Off-Subject- I need to finish my lesson plan for my 2nd graders today. This has distracted me from school but the added work makes me want to keep working so I do it all together.

Pelham 123- review

I'm going to try to keep the reviews short again. This film was okay. I liked it but it wasn't really good. It held my interest yet some things just rubbed me the wrong way.
Spoiler: The last few minutes of the everyday man becoming a hero (come on). My thought that Denzel is starting to be Denzel in every movie. The overdone action movie editing techniques with a few good ones mixed in. They did have a bunch of great actors in it though.
Blah blah blah okay small star.

2 movies I can't wait to see

This Is It- review

Just got home from seeing the film. I caught the 7:20 show and to my surprise I had the theater to myself. It was nice, like I dream it will be when I have my own home theater. Well it was def. worth the watch. It didn't have me as emotional as I thought I would be. I know if I would of seen him in concert I would have cried the whole time. From the footage you can tell the show was going to be amazing. It's not like those dvds you may have in your collection of live concerts like Woodstock or Bob Marley live. The full energy is not there but the main reason to see this film is to see Michael Jackson talk and to watch him in his zone.

Big Star

High School Musical- Review

After midterms my kid's got to watch this movie. It was just as corny and lame as I thought it would be. I do want to give a MLM award to the wardrobe department. I like how they made the kids look wholesome and innocent. Sharpay's wardrobe was a bit akward at times but I will let that slide.

The Cheetah Girl's was a better movie.

Year One - review

This film made the list of the worst movies I've ever seen. I watched this to see if it was okay to show to my students. It was not appropriate but I guess I should have known that. This was very hard to watch. In fact, I made the props for our plays while I watched it.

This weekend is our 48 Hour Film Project. I'm swamped not really in the mood to write any movie reviews. I also finished those plays. They went well and I am proud of myself. Back next week with reviews and an update on how the Film Project went. Going to post some clips from the plays and one rating system review later.

Surrogates vs. I -Robot

Time for a vs.
I watched Surrogates because I was trying to see Fame but I had a communication problem with the ticket counter lady. Anyways, I sit down and find out that the film I bought a ticket for is Surrogates. But I've been a Bruce Willis fan since back in the day. This is the story of people living in a world where people use robots to do their daily tasks. They live their lives through a stimulation(of a better version of themselves) while their robot goes to work. An FBI agent (Bruce) takes on a case when he discovers there is a weapon that can kill both the surrogate(robot) and the human attached to it. And at the bottom of this one is also a love story.

The Will Smith movie where he plays a cop who doesn't like having robots in his world. The robots turn evil and Will must stop them.

Now, I know maybe a better comparison is Stepford Wives but that film is missing the action and the bad-ass male hero. Another film that it reminds me of visually is Minority Report.

Did I like I-Robot better? I can't say either movie was really that great. I-Robot is a film I could easily watch again. Surrogates had that one time is enough feel. I'll take either Bruce Willis or Will Smith as a leading man any day. Ving Rhames plays a dreadlocked anti-robot revolutionary. I think this performance had nothing on his Holiday Heart drag queen role. There is a Terminator moment in Surrogates. They had some nice special effects to make everyone look like young and beautiful robots. The film plays to a fantasy world that cures many problems with our society.

is pretty corny but they gave a new look to robots. Shia LaBeouf added some comedy.
They made you feel sympathy for a Robot.

Going to give this one a small star.

Part 4 of producing the 48hourfilmproject Seoul

So, the time is approaching. I am nervous. I feel like a lot of decisions cannot be made until the last minute. We are starting off small this year which is nice. I think whoever does this next year will have easy success from our efforts. It has been a small struggle so far. I hope everyone is happy and we keep things organized. Labor of Love!

P.S. I'm busy btw working on stuff. I will have some reviews next week.

One of my favorite things about Singapore

I know this post is late but I wish I had one of these right now.
This is ice cream you can get on the street there. It starts off in this big brick and they slice it and put it between your choice of bread or wafers. I didn't try the one with the multi-colored bread just the one with the wafers. Actually, I had at least 3 during my stay. It was so cheap too, like pocket change cheap. It was so ma-she-ta (korean for delicious). If you didn't know already, I like snacks.

Fame focuses on a few kid's attending a performing arts high school who struggle with the troubles of being a teen and working towards achieving fame. I somehow want to see a remake that is just like the original but with new people. Is that asking too much? Would that really be hard to do? I mean when they take a play from the theater to the screen they usually try to stay true right? Let's take Rent for example. Same songs same bit of action yet for the screen they were able to create the scenes with a real backdrop. In Fame's case I think most of the people who will see this new film have not seen the original one. This film felt almost like a spoof. HAHA It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was no where near as emotional as the original. Felt like they were trying too hard. The scenes were short and it felt too cut n paste. Debbie Allen still looks great. I think they did an okay job of bringing it to 2009 and not making it High School Musicalish (except for the rap mixed with r&b moments).

The Winner of you pick the movie Unforgiven

That there is a darn good movie! I think I do like westerns.

An e-mail from my momma about Tyler Perry

This is an e-mail from my momma about Tyler Perry

"I haven't seen the movie but the comments from the younger adults is that it's tired; comments from the older adults like your Maman are that it's good. Let's face it, Mr. Perry's movies are filled with familiar cliches, witticisms, and ageisms , i. e. Madea, that evoke emotion from his predominantly female audience.

It's time to put some thought and some teeth into his future movies. After all, Madea should be able to rest and enjoy the fruit of her labors."

I can watch Kevin Spacey play this quirky, funny, spastic, laid back type of character that he always plays over and over again. Watch the trailer to get a feel for what this one is about. It wasn't very good. It had it's moments. It reminds me of the film Love Liza. It actually was cool until they brought in Keke Palmer's character. They decided to go in the direction of the troubled youth changing people's lives theme. The last 15 minutes were just lame. It was like this is how the film should end and I'm going to make it end this way. Little Star

Old School Friday

Next Day Air- review

Next Day Air

Hype has done it now Benny Boom has done it. Still waiting on Nzingha and Little X. Nzingha was up to do For Colored Girls which is now in the hands of Tyler Perry. Anyways, it's nice to see these long time music video greats crossover. I really want to know what took them so long. Ok back to the movie. The story involves drugs being delivered to the wrong house. The wrong house belongs to long time hustlers who consider this their big come up. Next thing you know everybody from the delivery driver, to the drugs real owner, to the hustler's cousin are involved in chaos. This movie was cute. I liked it. I laughed. I saw a bunch of Black and Hispanic male actors in one film. It was def. worth the watch.
Medium star.
