MLM's thoughts on the most talked about black films this year

Good Hair
I have become more social in my last few months in South Korea. There is a facebook group called the Brothas & Sistas of Seoul. A few weekends ago we got together to watch and discuss Chris Rock's documentary good hair. Here's something you may not know; a good percent of the blacks that are teaching over here are natural or have locks. There are some with perms too. Anyways, we watched it we laughed and then the discussion began. There was a lot said about why some women are currently perming their hair. One sister with dreads made the boldest comment by saying that women that chronically perm their hair that deep down inside they hate themselves(I can't quote her but that was the gist of her statement). They tried to get the brothers to discuss their preferences but only a few were there and only a few spoke on it. My thoughts on the film- it was funny, it was informative, and the best thing it did was cause us to talk about hair issues. I think Ice-T really helped this film. Lastly, I didn't care about the hair competition.

Precious
There was wayyyyyyyyyy too much hype around this film. Not that it wasn't a good film it just made me think I was in for a treat. I read the book for a bookclub discussion the Brothas and Sistas had this weekend(which I missed) . I read the book then I watched the film. Tambay told me not to have expectations but it was hard especially after reading the book. Okay, I agree the acting was good. I had a few issues with the way it was shot. There were moments when it felt like he was on a handheld doing some amatuer filmmaking. I thought I was shooting it for a second. I didn't like how it ended simply because it felt short with no resolution or insight to what was really ahead for any of the characters. In addition, to this whole light skinned people being good in the film beef was irking me. If the teacher would have been dark with dreads and lesbian folks would of had something to say. Now all sisters with dreads are lesbians- I can hear it now. If you don't mind me comparing the book to the film for a moment; what I got from the book was some assumptions I made about the author. I felt it paid homage to the writers who have inspired her and was a reflection of Harlem shown through the hardships in the life of one young lady. What I got from the movie was a young lady going through hardships and having some people come into her life helping her, find her own strength. I don't have any other problems with the film. I liked it just not a whole lot. I want to watch it again after some time has passed.

I know I'm super late with the reviews but maybe you want my opinion too.

Ninja Assassin-review

Boooooooooooooooooo
What is going on in the world of movies? This film had so much potential. From the beginning I knew this film could either be really good or be really bad. For some reason they decided to have this dumb story be the reason why this Ninja has resurfaced. I was happy that the leading lady was a black woman(Naomie Harris). Yet, her character sucked and her interactions with the Ninja just brought the film further down. The fight scenes were good. The Ninja's backstory alone could have been the film. I'm not gonna spoil the movie but if you have your hopes set on seeing this (like I did) don't waste your time. I think if they made a sequel to this film and made smarter choices they could have something here. I think it would be hard for them to get another story out of this but anything is possible. Rain the Korean pop star looked good and could pull off a few more stories. This is another one b/w okay and needing a random smiley.

Black Dynamite-Review

I pretty much loved it. It was really good up until a certain point then it kind of went down hill and started overdoing it but that didn't ruin the film. Michael Jai White was great. The film brought me back to the old days when movies were being made with all-star black casts. You def. want to check this one out. It is the best black film I have seen all year. If you haven't seen it yet get on it. I think the fellas are gonna love it.
Well done all around! Tickets Please!

B-girl movie -review

B-girl- a movie about a b-girl from New York who moves to Los Angeles after an incident with her ex-boyfriend. Then it becomes Save the Last Dance with break dancing. Wesley Jonathan plays the part of the black boyfriend. I was hoping to at least see some cool dance moves. This film was just following the formula and keeping it corny. BE B-GIRL BE! I have a script like this in my collection and I refuse to share it with people now. The love of the craft didn't translate into a good film.

An e-mail from my mother

She forwarded this one to me.

2012-review

I saw this movie last week. My friend and I were going to see it last weekend but when we got there, there was only one seat left. Gonna keep this one short and let you watch the Spill.com review which I pretty much agree with. The film is fun and entertaining through most of it. I really liked the special effects on the escape vessels. The movie was old school disaster movie style, meaning it wasn't so cool it was more random. A lot of the side characters didn't help the story at all. I'm still a fan of John Cusack. I think the story sucked but there were some cool scenes. I'm so tired of Thandie Newton's bland acting. Just once I want to see the actual president play the president in a film (Is this possible?). I'm going to give it a small star. Also, you should see it on the big screen if you do want to see it.

Random trailer for today

Julie and Julia - review

Julie and Julia
I do not like Amy Adams I really do not like Amy Adams. She's like a character herself. I feel like I'm watching the same too perky, sweet voiced role in every film she plays in. Meryl Streep however is just a talented woman. Stanley Tucci is also good at what he does. The film has two stories one is about Julia Childs as she learns to cook and sells her first book. The second story is about a woman named Julie who is turning thirty soon and decides to cook every recipe in a book by Julia Childs book (and blog about it), so she can feel accomplished. Many people complained about the Julie story in the film. I think it was okay but a tad bit too sweet at times. I think they told the story well visually but something about her story lacked appeal. I think it was because it was really hard to find sympathy for her or to even like her. The film was good but I think I will just give it a medium star b/c I wouldn't want to watch it again. . If you enjoy cooking it may inspire you.

Here's something maybe you didn't know the Julie story is about a real woman and she turned her blog into a book then what did we get a cute movie.

Sin Nombre -review

Sin Nombre - Takes us into the world of a gang in Honduras and the journey that many immigrants make to the U.S. I'm not sure how close this film is to real life but, I like how they took time to show an immigration journey and the many obstacles. The tattoo's that the gang members had especially the leader were unique. They are pictured to the left. The film tells two stories. One story is about a young man who's a member of a notorious gang and in love. He does the unspeakable leading him to run for his life. The other story is about a a young woman traveling with many other immigrants up to Texas after being separated from family. The two cross paths, fall in love, and journey to escape their pasts.

This film is worth the watch. Medium star

2 movies recommended by a friend- Reviews

The Time Traveler's Wife-
I've searched the net for this one. I finally got to watch it at my local theater. This film was slow and confusing. Most of the film was just this couple at varying ages with backdrops that didn't stand out. I feel like the editing could have been better and the story needed to be better. The concept was cool but it def. was not a tearjerker for me.

Black-a new film from India. A remake of the Helen Keller Story. The acting was great but I saw the Helen Keller Story many many years ago when I was a kid. Let me go off-subject for a second. My teachers showed us some of the most random films. Kids today get all this cute stuff while I was watching Roger and me(guess they helped shape me). While watching this film I felt like I knew what to expect since I saw the original film. The original is also painful to watch as the child and the teacher fight. I just wasn't moved. It was visually very appealing but I've been trying to finish this movie for days. I almost gave up. I get it these remakes are for the people who have never seen the original story. They can't be for the people who loved the original. I see they are re-doing Clash of the Titans. Fun Fun

Both of these films are between the small star and the random smiley. Also, my friend no longer gets to recommend movies to me.

Pepero Day

Today, is Pepero Day. A day dedicated to the cookie stick dipped in chocolate( I think some may be pretzel sticks). In Korea friends and lovers give each other these treats today.

Do a good deed!!!

This comes from my friend's livejournal:

"I checked this out, it is legit. "Very Special Request: Diana Harrison Biorkman has a 5-year old son in his last stages of a 2 1/2 year battle with Neuroblastoma Cancer. They are celebrating Christmas next weekend and Noah loves Christmas cards. Please take a minute to send a card to: Noah Biorkman 1141 Fountain View Cirlce, South Lyon, MI 48178. Thank you so much and please pass it on. Lets get a truck load to him!"

The mother is an aquaintance of a friend of mine. I know, I know. You don't know my friend, you might not even know me very well. You may have your doubts about this, I always have my doubts when I come across stuff like this. But no one's asking for any money, just a holiday card. All *I* aks is that you take a moment to consider sending a card. I sent a short simple pretty card that I found at CVS for two dollars. I signed my name along with my city and state. I thought about getting some cute holiday stickers and decorating the envelope with them, but I didn't see any. I figuered I'd rather get it in the mail right away instead of waiting till I find cute stickers and glitter or 'the perfect card'. I keep thinking "how wonderful for this little boy if he gets 75 unexpected cards from all across the country. Or a couple hundred. Or even just a dozen."

The Screenings

The 48 Hour Screenings went well. It was hectic and crazy but I'm happy. I was blessed with some great people to work with who were and have been really dedicated. Tears. I am so happy for the filmmakers and glad that some folks thanked me and lifted that worry off my shoulders. Two more events. We have to tally up some more votes tonight. One more screening tonight. Then the awards next Sunday.

Off-Subject- I need to finish my lesson plan for my 2nd graders today. This has distracted me from school but the added work makes me want to keep working so I do it all together.

Pelham 123- review

I'm going to try to keep the reviews short again. This film was okay. I liked it but it wasn't really good. It held my interest yet some things just rubbed me the wrong way.
Spoiler: The last few minutes of the everyday man becoming a hero (come on). My thought that Denzel is starting to be Denzel in every movie. The overdone action movie editing techniques with a few good ones mixed in. They did have a bunch of great actors in it though.
Blah blah blah okay small star.
