Black Nativity- review

After watching this film and pondering it for a day my cousin and I picked this film apart. Now,my cousin wasn't film major and she isn't a filmmaker but her observations were certainly on point. She too felt why have the lead meet all these characters with no larger connection. We noted that the story is flawed in many ways but it begins with a huge illogical plot. How is it Jennifer Hudson's character hasn't spoken to her parents in 15 years and hates them but when she is getting evicted she sends her son to go stay with them. How did that phone conversation go? "Listen I know we don't talk and all but can you watch my son for a little while because I have to work and all my resources I have being using before have been exhausted?" No really and if she is okay with sending her son away why not just ask her parents for the money to pay your rent your asking for their help either way. Cheesy and corny yes but what it really lacked was a good story.  I may have bought it better if the son played by Jacob Latimore ran away to meet the family he never knew.
Okay here's my good remarks: Tyrese sounded great and should have sung more. Angela Bassett is aging well and gave a good performance. Forest Whitaker sings who knew. I have to also add his acting even in such a small non-complex role was solid. I liked the speech at the end and it would have been more powerful if the undertone of the film were telling the single mother you don't have to struggle alone. Okay!
One star.....

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- review

Emu emu Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 the food film of the year. Went to see this with a group of kids 3 and under. This was my son's first big screen movie. He had a great time so much so he asked to watch it again. In this sequel the food machine has started making animal food combos that are taking over the island. Flint and his friends return to the island to stop the machine and then become fond of the animals there. Full of puns and corny jokes it's sure to tickle your child-like heart. Even though it felt really long the pace was good throughout. I'm going to give it 3 1/2 even though I enjoyed it more than Despicable Me 2 but not enough to give it 4 stars.

Despicable Me 2- review

Just a few minutes ago I got up to go to the bathroom and my leg was asleep and it reminded me I need to review this film b/c their is a scene where the lead character Gru's leg has fallen asleep. Silly I know.
This was another dollar show treat. I have never watched the first film I tried but didn't get into it. In this second film Gru is now no longer a villain and a happy father. He is lured  into being a spy to stop a villain planning to destroy the world.  He finds love in this film and I'm guessing like the first film the minions continue their silly antics. My son got bored towards the end he didn't ask to watch it again like other films in the past. I thought it was cute overall and found myself chuckling at the things they weren't trying as hard to throw at the audience. I think kids will dig the film especially ages 5 through 9.
